When a few large companies dominate
A relatively small number of very large companies account for a sizeable share of the US stock market. This is called market concentration. Their performance can have a strong influence on the overall market index, even though the index holds many companies.
Concentration can be a risk if the largest companies fall together. It does not, by itself, tell us when that might happen. Historical research shows that the identity of the largest companies changes over time and that periods of high concentration are a recurring feature of market history. A broad market fund’s holdings change as the market changes, but its returns can still be heavily affected by today’s largest companies.
The useful question for a portfolio is how much it relies on a particular group of companies, region or type of investment. Spreading investments more widely can reduce dependence on one area, although it cannot prevent losses across a market downturn.
It is understandable to have questions when the headlines are unsettled.
A financial planner can help put short-term developments in the context of your own investments, time horizon and financial plan before you make any decisions.
While market concentration is attracting attention internationally, many UK investors are also focused on events here.
The UK economy and the Autumn Budget
Higher government borrowing costs can leave less room for spending or tax decisions when a Budget is being prepared. The UK Budget is scheduled for 28th October 2026. Its contents are not yet known, and it would be premature to treat speculation about individual measures as a settled outcome.
The economic picture is mixed. The Office for National Statistics estimated that the UK economy grew by 0.4% in July and by 0.4% over the three months to July. Services were an important part of the three-month increase. At the same time, inflation and the cost of borrowing remain concerns for households, businesses and the government.
Markets may react to the Budget once the measures and official forecasts are available. How they react will also depend on what investors had already expected. A single announcement rarely gives a complete picture of the long-term prospects for a person’s investments.
One Thing Worth Remembering
The biggest risk to long-term investment success is often not ups and downs in the market – it’s reacting and making decisions during periods of uncertainty.
Markets will always experience ups and downs. Having a well-diversified portfolio and sticking to a long-term plan has historically been a more reliable approach than trying to predict what markets will do next.
