Top 10 Things To Do When You Retire

Ten Activities For The Post-Retirement Period

Retirement should be the most enjoyable stage of life, but what some retirees find is that retiring without a plan can actually be challenging. The great thing about retirement is that it is never too late to develop or revise an existing retirement plan. Of course, the transitional process can be greatly facilitated by planning ahead, so using these 10 retirement planning tips can ensure a long, happy and healthy post-work life.

1. Allow For a Transition Period – Many of us cannot change gears as easily as others. If you have developed an affordable retirement plan ahead of time, you probably have a good view of the retirement landscape. Whether you are entering with or without a plan, most of us are comfortable making the transition from work to non-work in small steps. If you rush into retirement, it can be an intimidating process. Start each day determined to enjoy a positive experience and be grateful for the opportunity to see life from a less hectic perspective.

2. Be Healthy – You have worked toward your retirement so it’s a good idea to make sure you are healthy enough to enjoy it. Commit to regular exercise, especially walking and breathing and pay attention to your diet. These two factors can help you enjoy a longer, happier and more vibrant retirement. Exercise and proper diet will not only have you looking and feeling your best, but they will have positive effects on your mental outlook.

3. Give Something Back – Many retirees decide this is time to give something back to the community or society in general. From mentoring children, to assisting a small business owner or working in a library or hospital, there are many physical and psychological benefits to volunteer work. You have the experience and there are plenty of eager minds out there and never too many volunteers.

4. Take a Part-time Job – It may be surprising but many retirees transition into retirement by taking a part-time job. Even if you have a sound financial retirement plan, many of us have a difficult time just walking away from the workplace. If you choose this route, make sure you are physically up to the task and that it is a job that interests you, as you will undoubtedly have a lot to offer.

5. Be a Sport! – Golf, tennis, swimming, hiking, sailing, rowing, fishing or any outdoor activity is a good activity. When we work, we often do not have time to practice these sports as much as we would like. Whether you work on your form, your swing, your stride or your results – any sporting activity is good for retirees. Many retirees also choose a sporting pursuit that they can share with their grandchildren.

6. Time for a Hobby – Perhaps you have a hobby that you want to become more serious or perhaps you would like to take up a brand new hobby? Either way, this is good for the mind and body and an enjoyable pursuit. You will have enough time to enjoy your hobby so pick one you have always considered. Writing, playing a musical instrument, building anything, painting, blogging, photography and any number of other hobbies are popular passions for retirees.

7. Be Social – Set your mind to being outgoing and conversational. Stay informed, and make new friends – this includes maintaining friendships with people who are still working as well as with retirees. Being socially diverse is an important ingredient in the retirement theme.

8. Travel – Not everyone likes to travel but if possible, its always good to change the setting occasionally. Go camping, hiking or take trips to foreign lands. Learn about new cultures. If you have planned ahead financially, you probably have been thinking about where you would like to visit. Now is the time!

9. Start a Business – If you have a sound financial plan for retirement, you may have enough resources to start or invest in a new enterprise. You should not put your finances at risk but you may have enough “risk” money to start or help start a new business. The risk of starting a new business is that it will consume the entrepreneur, and perhaps this isn’t for everyone – especially at retirement age.

10. Avoid Winter – Many retirees have planned to invest in a second home that might even become their primary residence in a warm climate. Once you have experienced a winter of sun and fun, it is hard to imagine why you did not enjoy it earlier in life. Pay attention to tax implications and don’t be in a rush. You may choose to sample tropical countries before you commit to a purchase but unless you like winter in the UK, look for the sun!

Retirement should be a rewarding, satisfying and stress-free proposition. Having the right retirement financial plan will ensure you can reach your goals.
